Smoke

Don’t give, don’t wait:
Like some drag in a bar singing:
“God save the queen,”
Whilst the coke leaves the room:
“Johnny, let’s smoke somewhere else!”

Let up the ride, take in the heat
Let the ride leave you, empty, broke;
Now walk the windy promenade
Half-awake, half-high
Without giving, o happy day.

But then you think, while amorous,
“Why did he say the hurt part?” Fess up
The tracks, you didn’t blast him away
Like the dough, the green with you:
You gave too much not having to wait.

Now, babe, here lies the guy, his foot sandy
(Still is, she’s) they were here making love,
Green and high, with haughty sighs all around
Oblivious to the rustling waves, not waiting
Since they never gave, not giving since they never had.
